What is a ground source heat pump?
Though many of us never think much of it, our houses are built on a giant heater. This heater, the earth, maintains a constant temperature throughout the seasons and can provide a large amount of energy. A ground source heat pump simply takes this energy stored in the earth and converts it into a usable power source. For example, in the winter months, the earth is often substantially warmer than the outside air. And even though the winter air in Montana may reach -10F, the ground will remain at 45-50F. While this doesn't sound like much, a significant amount of energy remains even at that cool temperature. A ground source heat pump strips the heat from the ground and sends it into your home.
In the summer months the processed is reversed. A liquid solution is heated from the excess heat in your home and then sent into the cool ground. When the liquid returns to the home, it's temperature has dropped back to the level of the earth. If it's 95F and the ground is only 50F, this can provide a highly efficient method of cooling your home.
